- Christ-centered. Every sponsored child hears the Gospel
and is encouraged to develop a lifelong relationship with God.
- Child-focused. children are directly engaged in a wide
range of developmental programs and activities.
- Church-based. Compassion partners with churches
located in needy communities.
Rev. Everett Swanson was moved by the plight of Korean orphans as he preached there in the
early 1950s. He went on to establish a program through which caring people could sponsor
needy Korean children for a few dollars a month. In turn, those children would be
provided benefits including food and clothing as needed, education, shelter, health care, and
Christian training.
Swanson's program was the basis for what became Compassion International.
Compassion's work has since expanded to 22 countries—including the United
States—providing life-changing benefits for needy children with or without families.
In response to the Great Commission, Compassion International exists as an advocate for children, to release them from their spiritual, economic, social, and physical poverty and enable them to become responsible and fulfilled Christian adults.
